Chequer and Rose was inspired by a menu cover for a tea room in turn of the century Glasgow. The artist was Margaret MacDonald Mackintosh, an accomplished artist and wife of Charles Rennie Mackintosh. The geometric pattern, the rose, and the stylized woman’s figure are all typical elements of Scottish art nouveau.
